The rank of Detective Superintendent or Detective Chief Superintendent is the higher rank above that of Detective Chief Inspector and occupied by some of the characters in Taggart. The role has always been associated with a certain biscuit. It was first held by Robert Murray who was nicknamed The Mint after the well-known sweet (Tom Watson) in the original pilot episode, Killer, and after the second episode, Jack McVitie, (who was nicknamed The Biscuit due to the fact he shared his name with the popular brand of biscuits) was Taggart's boss. After the death of Iain Anders, who played McVitie, the show has not had a regular superior officer since. More recently in the new series, (which was first shown in Scotland) the role of Superintendent has been occupied by Karen Campbell (Siobhan Redmond) during the Matt Burke era.
